Website of the day: Facebook
It’s www.facebook.com. Probably 80-90% of college students use it. What does Facebook do? You choose. Facebook is a way to:
- Express yourself. Your favorite things, political affiliations, activities, important or funny quotes.
- Meet others. Contact information, “walls” and discussion boards, poking, status updates. Photo albums with links to everyone in the pictures.
- Mess with people. Some things are just classic.
- Get personal information quickly and broadly.
The negs: Creating groups is addictive. Poke wars, embarassing photos, the immediacy and publicity of information. Facebook is another distraction from more imporant activities, i.e. college or work. Soon, Facebook will open up to everyone, and users worry it will become another MySpace dumpster. I’ve never used MySpace, so I don’t know.
Facebook is crucial.
