Late Night Blogging

Current Firefox Theme: Opera. It is beautiful.

Bookmarklets (don’t drag & drop, follow the hyperlinks): posticious bugmenot keepvid goup. WordPress-hosted editing gets pissy about embedding things.

I’ve taken a break from Kaarme, as OpenLieroX should have a Mac installer available sometime soon. All I really wanted to do was go back in time before the hard drive crash, grab the original Liero 1.33 code, and port to Python. OpenLieroX uses C++, so no beans there. But PyGame is just too slow anyway. Also, Wormux has a live cd! If only every open source game had a live cd, we could all play without worrying about platforms at all; it would all be done in a Linux environment. Hmm, Digital Paintball? Nudge nudge, wink wink.

Which brings me to Gentoo. I’ve used Ubuntu for a year. By far the most user friendly of the bunch, it is so easy to pick up from a Windoze background. The instability of Gnome lead me to get a MacBook–no regrets there. My mom has Ubuntu on her desktop computer. Victory dance. I plan to dive into Gentoo this summer; Ubuntu can only teach so much about the internals of Linux. I want to learn the GNU way.

I’ll try to leave the badges for now. They are addictive.

Why, oh why

I could not install OpenWRT onto my Linksys WRT54GC from my MacBook. All attempts, from the setup page GUI, to MacTFTP, to tftp in a terminal failed with errors like “Error 0: PID wrong.” Google searching these errors yielded no results. The setup page complained of too little resources, possibly due to handling network traffic while flashing the new firmware. Unplugging the Internet connection didn’t help. I decided to upgrade the firmware with Linksys’s latest (1.05.7), in order to have better luck in eventually upgrading to OpenWRT.

I have no trouble getting online, but my router is acting like a dumb repeater. My IP is from George Mason University’s DHCP server, not my router’s. I cannot connect to my router’s private network (even by setting 192.168.1.5/255.255.255.0 manually) in order to get to its setup page or tftp another firmware version. Dead in the water.
